Last night I had no luck getting the duck killer the Great Horned Owl that is now hunting my ducks in the pen, it was 11;30 pm when I finally shut it down and went to bed. Around 5 am I woke up and something told me to get out of bed right away quietly, I rolled out of bed and facing the window and saw the silhouette of the killer owl leaving the pen in the darkness.

I knew this was my chance to get him, so I opened my door to get the noise out of the way and proceeded to get dressed & load the shot gun. For the next 45 minutes I stood in front of the open door, it was freezing it was -22°C outside and the air coming in was nasty. I wasn't dressed for this but I had to no choice I knew that this was going to be my only chance to get his duck killer.

My eyes were blurry I could barely see I was half a sleep and but this was my chance so I had to take advantage of it. The sun was starting to light up the horizon and it was getting a bit easier to see in the pen so I knew my time was running out, once it was light out the owl would be gone for the day. Then the owl came back and as fast as he landed at the dead ducks body I pulled the trigger and it was a direct kill shot he fell over like a domino, instant death.

I let the ducks out of lock up now that the predator was gone and they were safe to come out again in the pen. Over the last couple of days I noticed the ducks were staying in the barn during the day, especially during the egg recon which was not normal now I know why the ducks were scared to come out they were being hunted in the pen.

Now today during the egg recon there was no ducks in the barn, I was all alone in the barn not a single duck was in there with me. It's amazing how they know the predator that was hunting them was now gone and they were now safe.

Winter is not going away it's actually feeling worse than January, today it was -11°C with a wind chill of -25°C, one thing about this time of year because of the sun feeling warmer and the winds becoming damp it actually feels colder than the dead of winter in January when it's -35°C, strange how your mind plays games on you like that.

The only ducks that are smart and know enough to stay inside out of this nasty cold weather are the Muscovy drakes they stay inside the shed out of the elements, the rest of the ducks are brain dead and stay outside.

Ms. Icecovy the female Muscovy duck in the hospital slash nursery hasn't defecated in over 2 days now, the enclosure is super clean, and all she is doing is sitting on the nest now. Not eating much or even drinking much, when I clean out the hospital/nursery she hisses at me a lot so I leave her alone. When I did the clean up today she didn't move at all she stayed on the nest all day, completely focused.

When I was doing the end of day water change in the bath tub for the ducks I saw I had another new problem to deal with, a female Pekin duck has a very serious eye infection or sinus infection that I have to treat ASAP. So I know what I'm doing tomorrow another duck into the hospital and more treatments.

Ms. Gimp has some serious feather growth since the hypothermia incident, today I got a good look at her and her feathers are really starting to form nicely they are fanning out and starting to look like feathers.
