This morning it was brutally cold -29°C when I got up, but the windchill was below the -37°C mark it was dangerously cold
I went down to the barn early in the morning and took water to the ducks so they didn't have to go outside for a drink, the barn was -6°C so the ducks weren't actually thirsty, but they sure were interested in the food.
They know enough now to stay inside the barn when it's freaking cold.
Later in the morning it started to warm up and the sun came out and ducks basically hung around the front of the barn and enjoyed the sun.
Discovered some really bad news during the egg recon, a female Pekin was seriously hurt.
Today it was time to clean out the duck hospital and it looks like another patient is moving in.
As the day unfolded it came quite clear what was going on, I had to do a emergency separation of the drakes from the females, the drakes are the cause of my hurt females and they are getting aggressive.
I'm not set up for 2 places to keep them separated so I got a job today I did not count on, I had to set up the old duck shack so I could lock up the drakes to keep them from the females.
This problem couldn't be put off it had to be dealt with NOW not later, so I got right to it and made a new home for the drakes.
The day was a brutal long cold day for me, but I had no choice it was my responsibility to keep the females safe and make sure they don't get hurt.
Now that the males are locked up I can return Ms. Gimp and the first injured female back to the main flock in the barn. I put 2 pink tags on the female Pekin before I returned her so we can keep an eye on her.
Turns out she is doing great and has no problems moving around with the flock in the pen and the barn since the drakes are locked up.
What a brutal day!
