Relaxing Dog Grooming

*Please excuse the mess in the video. I was moving house. Also please excuse the lack of dog bathtub and use of the powder blue bathtub circa 1980 😝

Little Lady gets a groom. She is a cockapoo with a “smoothie” type coat. This coat has a satin look to it, soft and shiny, and sheds very little. It also requires very little in the way of professional grooming, and is much simpler than a teddy-bear cockapoo to groom at home.

The best formula for a successful home groom goes in these steps:

1) exercise the pupper so they’re less antsy and bored and also so they don’t need to potty

2) give the whole dog a good look over. You need to know if there are any sore spots or anything going on you may have missed before. Combing the dog at the same time is efficient.

3) clip doggo nails that need clipped or filed

4) brush those pretty pupper teeth

5) clean the eyes with a soft, warm washcloth

6) clean the ears with a gentle, dog safe ear cleaner. If you’re worried about getting any solution in the eyes then prep the eyes first with a special eye drop with mineral oil during step 4

7) bath! Give a nice doggo massage in the tub. This really relaxes the dog and helps them feel more positive about the whole grooming experience.

8) Twice shampoo and once conditioner then a good clean rinsing.

9) dry the pup. Let them jump around a bit. Most dogs get froggy and want to “help” themselves dry.

10) scissor or clipper sparse or wayward hairs and style the doggo, take lots of time to gain the dog’s compliance, rather than trying to force the dog to cooperate. Kisses and pats go a long way in encouraging the pup to tolerate more annoying things like the sound of scissors near the ear.

Done!

A benefit of home grooming, as seen here, is having the time to do a really gentle job of the whole thing. The more you try to force and the tighter you grip the dog, generally the more they struggle and double down on not cooperating. It’s a very delicate dance of give and take. Gentle leadership goes a long way, here, as well as trust and genuine affection.

Enjoy the experience and help your dog look forward to a groom instead of hiding when she hears the word “bath”. It’s a great way to bond, practice training, and stay on top of your doggo’s health by giving her a really good once-over without any distractions. You’ll see and feel any bumps or lumps or scratches or sore spots.

And if you have a puppy, this is a great way to prep her for professional grooming. Give her several of these sessions, only trim a bit of fur on the face, and get her super accustomed to being handled and groomed.

Your groomer will look forward to your well behaved dog and your dog will be happy to see the groomer! You’ll be setting your pup up for a great relationship.

If you read this far you’re awesome!! I hope you’ll come back for the next video. And I hope you find little grooming videos peaceful and relaxing!!
