Pet Grooming 101 - Trimming Dogs Nails

This is the second in a series of videos we are doing on how to groom your pet. While this is aimed at those who will groom the pet, if you decide to have someone else groom your pet, these videos will give you something to say to your groomer about how you want your pet to be groomed. Please enjoy How We Do It Pet Grooming 101 – Trimming Dog's Nails.

It is important to keep a dog's nails trimmed properly, this is because the nails are naturally trimmed by vigorous exercise (running, digging, etc...). Dogs that spend most of their time inside a house do not get this exercise and so their nails grow long. Long nails on a dog will cause the toes to be bent at odd angles, also if the nail grows so long that it curls back into the pad it can cause infections.

Trimming the nails properly means that they will not cause injury to people who are holding the dog as well. The right type of nail clippers will help in this. They should be sharp so that the nail is cut not crushed. The type we use has 2 cutting edges and so the nail is cut from both sides. In a future video we will show how to use a mini grinder to get the nails smooth.

When trimming the nails, if the nail is dark colored and you can't see where the quick is, trim a little at a time (about 1 mm at a time). This gives you a chance to see the dot before it gets too close.

If the nail is cut a little too short and starts to bleed, don't panic, this happens (try not to have it happen too much). It is easily cared for by using a styptic powder such as Kwik Stop on the wound.

If the nail has grown very long the quick has grown out as well. This will require frequent trimming to get the quick to recede back.
