Hand stripping a Border Terrier

The most common grooming technique is clipping with a bit of scissoring to style and finish, but with a Border Terrier and other wire coated breeds we use a method called 'hand stripping' (it is also possible to strip spaniels but it is harder on a silk coat). This is where old loose hair is pulled from the skin, but don't worry it doesn't hurt or bother them at all (as you can see Monty here is quite relaxed). You can, obviously, clipper these dogs but stripping is the best way to keep colour, and skin and coat condition optimal. It is always advisable to not bathe the dog before or straight after stripping as in the first case it is harder to strip, and in the second it can cause skin problems (stripping opens the pores and can encourage infection), it is advisable to wait a week or two before you do.
