There is a basic rule of thumb in getting the hair out of your dogs eyes, and stretching your grooming dollar. You typically want to comb the hair to one side, and just snip going towards the nose. Comb to the other side, and once again snip going to the dogs nose, on either side. Then when it comes to getting the hair directly over their eyes, you want to tilt your scissors. You can do it two ways, you can either turn it this way, whichever way is comfortable for you, or this way. If you are fearful of cutting your dog's eyes, it just makes you nervous to use a good sharp pair of scissors, then get some thinning sheers and just snip.
Thinning sheers take longer, you are better off using a pair of good straight sheers, or rounded sheers, to do this job, because dogs lose patience if you do not get the job done quickly, just like children. And now we can see Gigi's eyes. If you have a dog that has hair that grows underneath the eyes, or out of the corner of the eyes, your thinning sheers really should be the only sheers that you use for this. And you just lay the sheer right -- this is weird to Gigi, I do not normally do this -- lay it right there, and just clean that area up. That way you have not made your dogs topknot look strange and the groomer is not looking at you like "What did you do to this dog?" when you bring them in to the groomer.
