How to take your Dog to the Dog Park and keep your dog safe in public.
Dog parks can be great for some dogs However, don’t just assume that your dog is going to do really well at a dog park, or that other dogs will automatically love your dog at a dog park.
That doesn’t mean that you should avoid taking your dog to a dog park but there are some things you may want to keep in mind.
• don’t just show up and hope for the best…Dogs are very social animals but can also be very complexed, we can’t possibly know how they will react in every situation.
• Socialization is extremely important for dogs but keep in mind, a dog park may not be the place to introduce socialization to your dog. Why?
• dogs that frequent dog parks are often under exercised and that is why the owner has taken them to one. As a result of this, unexpected outburst can occur.
• often times dogs feel anxious at a dog park. This doesn’t mean they don’t like other dogs, it just means they may feel overwhelmed at a crowded dog park.
Here’s something you can do to settle them before entering a dog park. Exercise them before you take them to a dog park. An exercised dog behaves better, more appropriately in new and stimulating situations.
While it may seem natural to take your dogs to a dog park keep in mind, their primary source of exercise should be with you. You are their primary person. Consider a long walk with your dog or a game of fetch prior to going to a dog park. Another good tip before considering taking your dog to a dog park is to introduce socialization to your dog with other pups first in a lower keyed environment. Early socialization should be done in controlled settings. Start with short playdates with a friend or family members dog and confirm that their dog is very dog friendly before allowing the two to interact.
When you are ready to make the step up to a dog park, chose to go at off peak hours to give your dog a feel for this environment before allowing them to take part during primetime play hours. If your dog is showing signs of nervousness at a dog park, remove them from the situation before other dogs get the chance to pick up on their apprehension causing elevated behavior.
You may be lucky enough to live near a “membership” dog park that would set your dog up for successful playtime more than one that is just open to the public. Dog park memberships ensure proper vaccinations as well as spay and neutering of all pets that are members. Big Plus! For instance, a female dog is in heat at a dog park could cause a lot of issues amongst other dogs. And don’t forget that playdates can be arranged through social media groups and local community message boards to find friends for your dog to interact with and play.
