Why do dogs pant?

Why do dogs pant? In this video, Dr. Justin Shmalberg explains the difference between panting and sweating.

Panting is a way for dogs to eliminate excess heat from their body. This panting in dogs is quite different from sweating in humans. The negative side effect of sweating is that you actually lose electrolytes, which is why sports drinks are used to replenish them. Since dogs don't have sports drinks, panting is an alternative that helps dogs cool off without losing electrolytes! However, after working out or a day in hot weather, extra water is always a great way to replenish!

Now you know why your dog is panting, and why dogs don't sweat!
