Advice from Dr. Patrick McHale, DVM on treating dog stomach upset on behalf of http://www.dog-health-guide.org/dog-stomach-problems.html. With dog stomach upset issues they can run from mild gastroenteritis (gastrointestinal problems) due to infectious type issues such as a stomach bug or bacterial issues.
There are diet related issues where a dog will eat foods that they aren't accustomed to. If the only symptom is diarrhea, then the cause is likely something to do with the diet. If there is a lot of red blood in the diarrhea (red brown or very bloody), then it might be an emergency that should be seen right away. A touch of blood could be less serious and could be caused by colitis.
Diarrhea only can be treated with an over the counter product such as Immodium AD. The dose is approximately 2 mg capsules for a big dog, followed by 1 capsule every 6 hours until it stops. For small dogs give 1, and then 1/2 capsule every 6 hours. You can also give the dog's digestive system a rest for up to 12 to 24 hours with water only, followed by a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger (pour off the fat) and white rice. This doesn't work for vomiting since a dog will not keep it down.
We see some cases that are caused by pancreatitis, which is a more serious condition. Symptoms of pancreatitis are often vomiting and diarrhea.
If the duration lasts more than a day, then a veterinarian should do a clinical exam. There are a few blood tests that can help to sort out what is causing the problem.
No matter what you do, if a dog is not recovering from stomach upset, see or consult with a veterinarian.
