GREYHOUND WHISPERER Lord Reagan's tips for new dog owners

When Lord Reagan was a strapping lad he was kennel assistant to Australia's greatest greyhound trainers Jim & Christine Coleman, of Londonderry. He used to feed & walk such champions as Odious, Ungwilla Lad, General Jeff, He's Some Boy & Kawati Boy. Here are some of his tips for those unfamiliar with greyhound pets, on how to build trust & bond with a rescued or retired racer / pet:
* Vigorous ear rubbing (they love it ... you'll hear them groan)
* Jockey play (pretend to "ride" them like a pony)
* Back massages & playful slapping (where they can't scratch)
* Gentle snout shake (if they let you, you're bonding quickly)
* Stand-up chest hugs (selective clean ones can jump up)
* Morning rituals (ignore them when cleaning up their ablutions)
* Collect their business IMMEDIATELY to keep yard nice & clean
* Move slowly & be reliable & predictable always (this calms them)
* Sudden movements will excite them & cause them to bark (don't)
* Always reward good behaviour with a bear hug & ears rubbing
* Wherever possible let them have a sensible, mature playmate
* Supervise their play daily having your cup of tea, they'll love you!
* Immediately collect their droppings & dispose of in a special bin.
* Wash face/hands regularly after handling dogs (esp if licked).
* Always rug your greyhounds in winter or on cold nights.
* If they dig holes throw some poo in that filled hole. It stops them.
* If they misbehave cop it sweet - they're dogs - a stern voice is all.
* Treat every dog in accordance with its different personality.
* Make them feel special without SPOILING THEM (no treats ever)
* Greyhounds thrive on regularity. Be punctual. Stick to the routine.
