False Pregnancy and Mammary Abscess in Dogs

Dogs that have a false pregnancy may develop enlarged mammary glands that secrete milk. They may also "mother" toys and carry them to their beds to coddle and nurse them. Dogs that have had puppies can develop abscesses of the glands which are dangerous. Spaying dogs will take care of the false pregnancy and antibiotics and surgery may be necessary to treat the abscess of the mammary gland. Tumors are small hard nodules of the gland more common in non spayed females.
