Service Dogs What most vets don't tell you about altering

Please see links below for some of the articles and scientific information and list of some of the vets doing alternative sterilization surgeries. Altering your dog is not a simple decision and it can be very dangerous for you dog and the work your dog does if it is a working dog. There ARE alternative surgeries that spare the hormones while sterilizing the dog. Puppies can easily be prevented by keeping males and females seperated during the critical time period. See links for articles and info on medical studies....these are only a brief sampling.

If you don't believe what is below...maybe you'll listen to a VETERINARIAN speak about it-

Please google risks of spay neuter altering, Danger of spay neuter altering for more info...there is numerous articles I just put a sample here. Also there is a facebook group about the subjects that keep many of the medical studies in their archives....search ovary sparing spay on facebook..

There ARE alternative surgeries that some vets do...the female one is ovary sparing spay which is comparable to a hysterectomy in human females that leaves the ovaries. For males they simply get a vasectomy the same as a male human. This ensures that they are sterile and cannot reproduce while allowing them to keep the hormones they need to be as healthy as they can be. If you don't feel up to the challenge of strictly keeping males and females seperated at the proper time or worry you'll make a mistake...these surgeries take care of that.

What I do with males is this- I keep them intact until full maturity and train for living appropriately with the hormones just like human teenage boys learn to control their behavior. If at maturity I find the male dog's behavior and temperament acceptable I leave them be with their hormones for the rest of their life barring medical need to remove something. If I find that the male behavior is unacceptable and intolerable I will then consider a full neuter knowing that even then it may not take care of the problem...but it might offer a help. Females are left intact usually until they become seniors ...for big dogs that live 8-10 that is usually about 6 years... then a full spay or at least the alternative surgery to remove the uterus- then you still have to watch the mammaries for problems. In a working female where you just CAN'T deal with the mess of the heats for the working life, I allow full maturity then the alternative surgery can be done which deals with the messy parts - the alternative surgery could be done anytime but I personally like to leave everything alone until full maturity as those parts might play a role that we just don't know about yet- after all look what we're finding out now about those parts.
