Please listen to the video carefully or follow the following steps:

You are your dog’s caretaker and want the best for your pet. A large part of your pet’s health is determined by the food that they eat. However, with so many food options out there, how do you choose which is best for your dog? There are some simple guidelines to help you with the decision of what to feed your pet. While there is no one “best” dog food, there are certainly some that are better than others in terms of nutrition.

1. Evaluate your dog's personal daily needs. Every dog is unique and needs different things from their food. Some questions to consider are:

a) Are they a large breed or small breed? If they are a small breed they may not be able to bite into the larger kibble like others. Large breeds should stay away from high protein as it can speed up their growth which is very bad for them.
b) Do they have a specific health issue that requires specialized nutritional needs? Those that have allergies should stay away from any food with grains or corn as these are the top allergy causes.
c) What is their energy level and do they have responsibilities that require them to expend a lot of calories and energies?

2. Determine the nutritional needs of your dog. You should think about the caloric needs of your pet, but also remember that those calories should not all come from just one type of nutrient, for instance only protein or only carbohydrates. For instance, protein ranges of 20-25% of calories are sufficient for healthy dogs, growing and otherwise.

a) If your pet is maintaining a healthy body condition where you can see a waist and easily feel the ribs with the flat of your hand, those are signs that your pet is in good shape. If your pet is heavier than they should be, cut back the calories by 10-25% for a month and then re-evaluate. If your pet seems too thin, then increase the calories by 10-25% and see what happens. Level off the amount fed once the desired body condition has been achieved.
b) If you feed too many calories to your dog, it will store the excess calories on its body, whether it is calories from fat, protein, or carbohydrates.
c) Dogs can develop pancreatitis with high levels of fat (and sometimes protein) in the diet. Fat is a form of concentrated energy. A lower fat dry dog food will have 6-8% fat, while a higher fat diet can be as high as 18% fat.

3. Examine different dog food labels.

a) Look for the list of ingredients first. They are listed from largest to smallest amount, according to the ingredients weight. The first 5 ingredients should be meat. Not corn, rice, brewers rice, potatoes or wheat. Make sure they name the meat such as chicken instead of poultry meal.
b) Locate the dog food guaranteed analysis statement. This will give you precise information on the ingredients in the dog food and the percentages of the amounts of the ingredients. This is important because it is a much more accurate version of the nutritional ingredient value of the dog food and will help you in determining if this is the best dog food brand for your dog.
c) Leave certain ingredients out. Unnecessary ingredients such as corn, wheat, chemicals, fillers and preservatives add nothing to your dog's nutritional needs and can actually harm them.

4. Sign up for free trials or buy smaller packs. Once you have read through the labels and are familiar with what ingredients to look for, sign up for a few free trials of dog food samples online. This way you can sample the food before you purchase a full bag.

5. Make notes of your dog's reaction to each new food that they try.If they have been feed a cheap brand before there may be some reluctance to try a new one as it doesn't have the addictive chemicals to make them want to eat it. Remember not to introduce more than one new food at a time and to slowly increase the new food to the old food so as to avoid diarrhea and vomiting. Some things to watch for:

a) Do they eat the whole bowl or just a few pieces?
b) Do they get sick afterward?
c) Does their stool change consistency?
d) Is there any change in their skin or coat? A good food should cause the coat to become glossy, smooth and soft.

Continue using the best suitable dog food obtained in the steps shown. Also keep on changing food again as season changes or your dog looks unhealthy.
