Canines are very unique when it comes to their reproductive physiology. During ovulation, immature oocytes (aka eggs) are released during a 12-36 hour period. Those eggs will require 55-72h to mature in the uterine tubes before they become fertilizable.

That is why performing a timing of ovulation is key to determine when to breed.

On top of that, the male’s sperm cells live in average 2-4 days in the genital tract of the bitch.
Taking this into account, when using fresh semen, bitches should be bred between 1-4 days after ovulation
