Human being have played a role in the development in three categories of dog breeds. They are the Pure Breeds, Working Breeds, and Landrace Breeds. As you move from pure breeds to landrace the degree to which humans play a part is lessened.

Let’s start by defining the categories. The least common of the categories is Landrace. Landrace breeds are local populations of dogs that are consistent enough to be considered a breed, but are more variable in appearance than standardized breeds. Landrace breeds are a combination of human and natural selection. The realities of natural selection and geographic isolation create a genetic consistency and adaptation to a specific location. Because landrace breeds develop based on natural selection, they are often considered to be generally healthier and more intellectually keen than the other categories of breeds. A great example of this is the Central Asian Shepherd. This breed has evolved in Central Asia as a livestock guardian. Not only is it an exceptional guardian of livestock, it has the ability to deal with extreme heat as well as extreme cold, which is a reality of the region. In the modern context landrace breeds like the Central Asian Shepherd are often standardized and move away from their landrace status.

Working dogs, any breed of dog bred for a job is a working dog. Working dog breeds often developed around a task, like herding, retrieval, or tracking to name a few. However, in the modern context, working dogs are often standardized dog breeds, bred based on their ability to work as opposed to dogs of the same breed, that are bred for the show ring. Modern working dogs are often the creation of an individual or professional group. For example, Louis Doberman a dog catcher and tax collector created the Doberman Pinscher as a protection animal. An example of a breed created by a professional group, is the Boerboel developed by South African farmers, to perform the several task, most importantly guarding the homestead from four and two legged invaders. Working dogs are generally healthier and smarter than non working counterparts.

Pure breed, is a general term, which basically identifies a dog bred to a kennel club’s standard. There are several terms, which are interchangeable with pure bred, and they are pedigree and show dogs. These dogs are typically bred for confirmation shows which favor aesthetics over function. In the pursuit of visual cohesiveness, the practices of line breeding and in breeding are often abused. With the tightening of the gene pool pure bred dogs are often less healthy and less smart than the other two types previously mentioned. s of June, 2016 the AKC fully recognizes 190 dog breeds. Most successful dog breeds will typically attract the attention of a kennel club and become pure bred. Hopefully, at some point the kennel clubs will reverse their course and favor function over phenotype.
