The first litter of puppies born under a new joint dog breeding programme are getting ready to serve as full-fledged members of the Correctional Services and Customs & Excise departments.

They are the offspring of English Springer Spaniels from the two departments, a breed widely raised as sniffer dogs.

Born in May, the two male and five female puppies have started basic training which will become full training when they reach one year old.

Five will be assigned to accompany correctional officers on patrol duties and two will receive further training by Customs to sniff out drugs and explosives.

The joint breeding programme is to replace detection dogs in the two departments that are ready for retirement. (http://j.mp/2b7A0O3)
