THESE ARE 10 ULTIMATE MILITARY & POLICE DOGS
Dogs trained for police work answer to a higher calling.
They’ll take the oath, same as with human officers, and it’s a tough dog life for these four-legged officers putting themselves in harm’s way to save lives.
These are heroes specially trained to serve in battle and covert missions for the defense force.
They are also brave police working K-9s tasked with tracking, detection, and criminal apprehension duties to help fight crime.
It’s a tough job, and it’s going to take smarts, valor, discipline, and stanch obedience for a K-9 to make the cut for law enforcement and military duty.
But the dog breeds you’re going to see here are perfect for the job. These are the 10 ultimate military and police dogs.
Also, be sure to stay to the end of the video to find out why this Navy SEAL dog got a cookie from then president, Barack Obama.
#10. Beagle
When you think of law enforcement canines, Beagles are rarely the first dog breed that comes to mind. But these charming little doggies have the best noses in the sniffing business - and that’s police work for them.
Unlike other good sniffer dogs, the Shepherds for instance, which are dual trained in protection and sniffing, Beagles are single-purpose. They only sniff, and boy they are darn good at it.
Beagles are employed in both military and police service to sniff out illegal substances. These little officers will literally sniff out a needle in the hay stack if you ask them to find it.
To them, one gram of drugs is as good as a kilo. As such, they are used in areas like military bases where nuclear weapons are housed and there is ZERO tolerance for drug use or possession.
Being a smaller, less intimidating dog breed, Beagles are perfect for TSA service, airport security, border zones, and similar situations where they are required to sniff out narcotics and other illegal substances without alarming travelers.
#9. Bloodhound
Bloodhounds have a characteristically large, wide-open, and powerful nose believed to have 300-million scent receptors. These too are champion sniffers with the best nose for tracking.
Being a focused and energetic breed, Bloodhounds will segment and track a scent in the air or on the ground for miles and they won’t rest until they come to the end of the trail.
And while most other dogs will only pick up an hours-old fresh scent, bloodhounds can track a missing child weeks after they were reported missing.
You’ll see later on this video that dog breeds like the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd are law enforcement favorites because of their versatility, but the Bloodhound sniffs and tracks better than any other dog on this list.
Many times, Bloodhounds serving in the force have been hailed as heroes as they save lives one sniff at a time. They play a major role in finding lost persons, locating survivors, and tracking down fleeing criminals.
The very first Bloodhounds were commissioned in London in 1889 and were specifically deployed to track down the most notorious serial killer in human history; Jack the Ripper.
#8. Labrador Retriever
Affectionately called Labs, these are a super friendly dog breed with a charming personality that makes them excellent family dogs.
You’ll hardly see them serving as security dogs, but they are ideal for other areas of law enforcement.
Originally, Labs were efficient and reliable hunting partners, something that has made them good at sniffing. If trained properly Labradors can be top-notch narcotics detection dogs, as well as serve in tracking down bombs and explosives, and in search and rescue missions.
While they’ll not give a passive indication like the Beagle, Labs are more obedient, more adaptive, more intelligent, and they rank better in terms of trainability as compared to Beagles. Hence, Labrador Retriever K9 officers are deployed in areas where both the dog’s natural instincts and smarts are needed to get the job done.
Labrador Retrievers serving in law enforcement are generally used by bomb squads to detect explosives, and TSA or Border security to sniff out narcotics and other illegal substances. When they detect the contraband, they’ll physically scratch on the surface concealing it or they’ll bark to alert the handler. It’s a hands-on – or rather, paws-on – approach for the Lab.
#7. Rottweiler
Rottweilers were developed for strenuous farm duties, including herding livestock by day and pulling heavy carts loaded with meat. The difficult farm life hardened them for their next career as police and military dogs, where they served in the first and second World War, both as messengers and guard dogs.
