~ Our younger generation of SK activists are working hard to end this cultural tradition dating back in this particular city to 4th century AD ~ it's sad and sickening to many of us, however to them this disconnect is seeped in deep tradition ~ I believe we are really making change happen though ~ and we will continue to liberate more and more animals ~ ty to everyone who uses their voice ~ ©mgf
~ Here are some facts I put together for this protest today ~
~ Background on the Boknal Festival ~
~ Boknal Dog Meat Festival Held July 17th thru August 17th ( this year it began on the 13th of July)
~ South Korea has industrialized Dog farming and the Dog meat trade ~
~ Approximately 17,000 dog farms breeding and selling dogs to feed the demand for canine cuisine
~ Each of these farms breeds and sells approximately 1,000 dogs each ~ that means that roughly 2 million dogs are sold and murdered for human consumption every month ~ the amount of animals bred and killed can total 17 million dogs a year, in South Korea alone
~ HISTORY ~
~ South Korea’s history of Dog meat consumption began as far back as 4th century AD ~ this fact comes from the ‘Goguryeo’ Tombs where they have found art depicting dogs slaughtered in a storehouse front
~ The most common dish is called ‘Bosintang’ or ‘Gaejang’ Steeped in South Korea’s history for generations and is now a common dish throughout western, central and north Africa ~
~ The younger generations of Korean people are rarely, if ever, a part of this dog festival, nor do they consume dog meat ~ in fact most of the younger generations are appalled at this and it’s created a cultural divide
~ Traditionally the belief is that dogs raised for consumption somehow are different than those we call companion family pets ~ This thought process has fostered the indifference to their suffering
~ These dogs used for consumption are considered to produce medicinal properties ~ Researchers have studied this and conclude there are no medical benefits to consuming dog flesh ~ Most people who consume dog are under the belief that is will help cure them of illnesses or enhance healing after surgery
~ HEALTH RISKS TO HUMANS ~
~ Dog farms are unregulated, which allows for the lack of over site into the diseases they carry. Because there are so many dogs crammed in cages on these farms, Rabies, Cholera, and other diseases are frequently found in these dogs ~ What this means ~ people are not only consuming diseased flesh, they’re also digesting the plethora of antibiotics being used to try and stave off these diseases ~ there’s no over site in the use of antibiotics and it’s estimated that 10% of these dogs die before slaughter due to increased breeding and the spread of diseases ~ Antibiotics only keep them alive until slaughter if even that.
~ LAWS IN SOUTH KOREA ~ APA 2007 ‘Animal Protection Act of 2007’ and the AWA ‘Animal Welfare Act’
~ We’re working with our counterparts in South Korea and other Asian countries to help them end this tradition of dog breeding for human consumption ~ and create stricter and more efficient laws ~ ©mgf
