9. Weimaraner
Members of Germany’s Weimar court developed the Weimaraner breed during the early 19th century for hunting large game. Nobody knows for sure what the dog’s ancestry consists of, but it’s thought to descend from a mixture of breeds, including the Hanoverian Scenthound, Bloodhound, Great Dane, English Pointer, German Shorthaired Pointer, and possibly others.
8. Borzoi
The Borzoi is part of a group of slender dogs called sighthounds, which includes the Saluki, Greyhound, Whippet, and Afghan hound. These dogs are so pretty, aren’t they? I love their long faces!
7. Dalmatian
Who didn’t want a dalmatian as a kid?? The Dalmatian may be best-known for its distinctive spotted coat, but its original claim to fame was its sprinting ability. It was first bred several hundred years ago and has been running ever since, reaching a top speed of 37 miles per hour (59.5 km/hr).
6. Whippet
Whippets are believed to be descendants of greyhounds and terriers. The dog first appeared in literature and art during the 17th century, and became an official breed during the 19th century.
5. Afghan Hound
The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest dog breeds and is thought to descend from the Saluki. It’s so ancient, its origins are unknown, although researchers speculate that the dog entered Afghanistan with Alexander the Great’s army -- a theory bolstered by ancient rock carvings of dogs resembling the Afghan Hound.
4. Doberman Pinscher
The Doberman Pinscher was originally bred as a guard dog for a tax collector named Louis Dobermann, who crossed shepherds with Rottweilers, black and tan terriers, German pinschers, and possibly Greyhounds and/or Weimaraners.
3. Vizsla
The Vizsla originated in Hungary and has existed for several centuries, with the first known reference to the breed appearing in a 1357 text called the Illustrated Vienna Chronicle. This breed was developed as a hunting dog and even worked with falcons by pointing out birds for the falcon to pursue. During both World Wars, the Vizsla worked as a messenger.
2. Saluki
The graceful and elegant Saluki is a medium-sized sighthound and one of the world’s oldest dog breeds. It’s one of the 14 dog breeds who are the least genetically different from wolves. The Saluki hails from the Middle East and has been around for thousands of years, as evidenced by images and mummified remains at archaeological sites.
1. Greyhound
DNA evidence suggests that the Greyhound is one of the world’s most ancient dog breeds. They’ve been around for millennia, and were written about as early as the late first century BC by the Roman poet Ovid. The modern greyhound is very similar to an ancient breed of Sighthounds that were used as hunting dogs in Egypt, Turkey, and the Celts and appear in temple drawings from 6,000 BC.
