Top 10 Chinese Dog Breeds - Aspin
Here is a list of dog breeds that originated from China

1. Tibetan Mastiff:
Tibetan Mastiff, also known as the lion dog, is an ancient dog breed originating from Central Asia. This is a massive dog weighing in around 140 to 170 pounds and sporting a luxuriously long coat that contributes to it’s lion-like appearance. In China, this breed boomed in recent years and became a status symbol for the wealthy. Owning this dog was viewed as stylish while also paying homage to China’s cultural heritage.

2. Chinese Shar-Pei:
Shar-Pei is an ancient breed from an ancient land, perhaps related to the smooth-coated Chow Chow and the Tibetan Mastiff. The breed developed in the southern provinces of China as a working companion of farmers and peasants who needed a cattle herder, guardian, and hunting helpmate. Most people are unaware that the Shar-Pei  with his loose skin, nettlesome coat, and small ears which protected him in fights, are unfortunately characteristics that originally gained him favor as a fighting dog.

3. Chow Chow:
Chow Chow is thought to have originated in China from the Han Dynasty around 300 B.C. They were used as hunting and guard dogs. This is truly an ancient breed. The Chow Chow is a medium sized dog with a very large head and round large muzzle. The ears are erect and the tail is bushy and curls over the back. The eyes are small and deeply set into the face, giving them poor vision. The mouth and tongue is bluish black.

4. Chinese Crested:
Despite what its name suggests, many people do not believe that the Chinese Crested actually originated in China. For one, the Chinese Crested does not keep in line with a number of ancient Chinese dogs like the Pug or the Chow Chow. The Chinese Crested has too recent a history to be counted among those breeds in pure historical longevity.

5. Chongqing dog:
Chinese Chongqing Dog is a rare breed that is said to have been in existence since the early Han Dynasty in China. The breed originated from the Chongqing city of China where they were used for home protection and as hunting dogs. There are very few Chinese Chongqing dogs left in the world. Most of these dogs live in rural communities and the breed is considered to be extremely rare, even in its homeland of China.

6. Shih Tzu:
Shih Tzu also known as the Chrysanthemum Dog, is a toy dog breed, weighing from 4 to 7.25 kilograms (9–16 lbs) when fully grown. The breed developed in China. The exact origin is unknown and is thought to have originated in the Tibetan Plateau.

7. Tibetan Spaniel:
This breed originated in Tibet. It is descended from dogs from China and other Buddhist countries. The Tibetan Spaniel is considered an ancient breed, being that there is evidence of its existence over 2000 years ago. Most small Asian dogs are believed to be descended from the Tibbie. Highly esteemed in ancient Tibet, they were often given as gifts to royal houses and the dogs were spread throughout Asia.

8. Pekingese:
The Pekingese dog breed started in ancient China where only the Imperial family were permitted to own them. They were bred for religious purposes, but they became the pet of the emperors and his family. Pekingese were royal pets and they were treated royally – which can help to explain their temperament. Common people had to bow down to a Pekingese, if one of them were to pass nearby.

9. Pug:
In ancient times, Pugs were bred to be companions for ruling families in China. The pet Pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. Pugs later spread to other parts of Asia. In Tibet, Buddhist monks kept Pugs as pets in their monasteries. The breed has retained its affectionate devotion to its owners since ancient times.

10. Lhasa Apso:
Lhasa Apso is an ancient breed, developed in Tibet from the Tibetan terrier and similar herding-type Tibetan dogs. The conversion of Tibet to Buddhism in the 7th century AD established the Lhasa Apso as a definitive breed. Buddha is said to have had power over lions, and the Lhasa Apso with its full coat, full head of hair and leonine colors was referred to as "the lion dog."
