The Golden retriever was developed in Scotland in the mid 19th century. During those days, the wealthy Scottish elites were very fond of the wildfowl hunting. But they were not happy with the existing retriever breeds due to their incapability to effectively retrieve the game; both form water as well as land. This was necessary because the hunting grounds were having several marshy ponds and rivers. They wanted a dog which could be excellent at retrieving on both land and water, as well as be even tempered and loyal to his master at home.

This lead to the crossing of the best water spaniels with the existing retrievers. The descendant dogs were further bred with the wavy and flat coated retrievers, leading to the development of the Golden Retrievers. They were named so, due to their yellowish golden colour and retrieving abilities.

As the sport of hunting gained its popularity, the Golden retriever also took his share. He was very much appreciated and liked by the hunters for his amazing retrieving abilities as well as his intelligence, even-tempered nature and loyalty towards its owners.
