Quarantine! How we are dealing with Giardia as dog breeders

WE’RE BACK! We disappeared from Youtube for a little while to celebrate the holidays, go on a cruise, and adjust to some brand new changes in our lives (see the video to learn more!), but now we’re back and excited to share our experiences as dog breeders in 2020!
To start off the New Year we got some discouraging news. Giardia has hit our property. Anyone who has dealt with this pesky parasite knows that it is a formidable foe. While it may live within adult dogs and cause no symptoms, puppies can get diarrhea which can lead to dehydration. It can be treated quite easily with 5 days of Panacur dewormer, but that’s only part of the picture when dealing with it.
See, Giardia comes out in a dog’s poop and can live in the environment (especially when it’s wet) for a very long time. It’s very easy for dogs (and other animals) to pick up if they step on the poop, lick their bottoms, or drink water contaminated by it. So, not only does one need to treat the dog, but also take extra measures to prevent them from reinfecting themselves.
In a perfect world, getting rid of giardia would involve keeping the dogs in a perfectly sanitized environment, picking up their poop as soon as it happens, bleaching that area, then washing their feet and bottoms before they can lick themselves, and killing the parasite by either burning the property or bleaching it (like dousing it in beach). Now, with one dog, that all might be possible….but we have 9 currently residing with us.
But we aren’t backing down from the challenge! We are doing everything we can to beat this bug! It is battle Giardia at the Schwind house as we attack this with a vengeance!
We also have a lot of plans in place to take even further preventative measures in the future to reduce the effects of Giardia on our puppies.
YOUR TURN:
These days have been exhausting and there are plenty more ahead, so if you have any good vibes to send our way, they would be graciously appreciated. Also, if you’ve dealt with Giardia, please share your experience!!! Any tips would be amazing!
