Sprouting Organic Whole Grains For Chicken Feed for small farms, backyard chickens or the homestead. Organic chicken feed is very expensive. To stretch the chicken feed budget, we decided to sprout whole grains using five-gallon buckets. We put a scoop of wheat, barley, peas, oats and corn in separate buckets. Add water to each bucket so that it covers the grain by about an inch or so. Let it soak for 24 hours. Next day, rinse it and drain off the water. Each grain will sprout in 3-5 days. Sprouted grains provide added nutrients and make the grains as digestible as possible. We are finding that there is so much less waste using sprouted grains to feed our laying hens. Next video, we will show how we set up the buckets to create a repeating cycle to continuously feed the chickens sprouted grains.
