How To Care For a Chicken After Hawk Attack: Part 2

Think I filmed this two days after the attack. The poor hen was traumatized but eating and drinking (with help). In this video I have placed her in a shoe box and kept her inside due to the summertime conditions. So here are the steps to keep an injured bird from an animal attack so far:
1. Isolate the chicken from the other chickens. The other chickens will view her as a threat due to her condition and cause stress and attack her.
2. During warmer temperatures, bring the injured chicken inside to allow wounds to heal. Infections can easily happen if there are bugs around to attack the wound. You may want to gently cleanse the wound areas with warm water.
3. The chicken may need to be hand fed due to trauma and injuries. Put water to his/her beak as well as soft food starting out. The chicken may allow you to hold his/her beak open to accept food.
4. Be patient! An injured chicken needs time to rest and mend. Make sure he/she eats and drinks daily and gets plenty of rest.
