The Welsummer chicken is a Dutch breed, named after the small village of Welsum, in the eastern Netherlands. In its usual size It was bred at the beginning of the 20th century from local fowls of mixed origin and Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, Partridge Leghorns, Cochins and Wyandottes. The bantam type of the Welsummer is of younger age, but it also has the same useful dual purpose characteristics.
