Time for some baby African Spotted & Black leopard cub baby sitting. Part of the duties of not only the staff but volunteers is to monitor the cubs at Cheetah Experience. They are watched after in a 24hr cycle for their safety and health. That take many people and the trained volunteers make a useful pool of people.
This day was leopard cub duty. Three were two African spotted leopard cubs were born earlier this year and one black one that is a preemie; born premature and her mother did not nurse it properly... Gemini lost weight and had to be removed from her mother and cared for.
Gemini is TINY but very sweet as you witness. I look forward to seeing her again and check on her temperament and behavior today. She is a lap cat and loves to sleep on you.
Rules are you are NOT to pick any of the cubs up, handle, or restrain unless they are in danger, like climbing a fence where they could fall and hurt themselves. It is partly why they are harness training... to handle them, transport back and forth easier to different enclosures when bigger (they can be walked) and taken for walks in the veld.
There are also health concerns for cubs this small and through washing and sanitizing your shows and hands are a must every time one enters and exists the baby enclosures.
I hope to have some updated video of the three cubs progress in growing up. The two spotted leopards are Cosmo and Cassius.
