Normally to stop cats from doing this, I've found setting a "no cats on food surfaces, whether there is food on them or not" rule usually works. That's something cats can learn fairly easily, and it solves the problem by removing the opportunity for temptation.

If I'm eating elsewhere, they're allowed to expess interest, and if it would be bad for them or I don't feel like sharing I just push them away gently with a firm "no."... which is a word they understand, more or less... sometimes combiined with "mine" or "not for kitty" which they probably don't understand. This works a lot less often as you can see here with the continuing of naughty slim shady the cat trying to get the food!

Cat's don't really care about pleasing their owners, but they can be trained. Like with any animal you have to find what motivates them, what discourages them and what the most effective way to apply these is. Most of the time I find that it's a matter of persistence.

Along these lines there are several options. You can not have food in a reachable spot, but almost any spot is available to a cat. You could do like one poster suggested and try to trick her into thinking it's nasty, but she already knows it's been good before.

The important thing in any training is to be consistent. You'll loose weeks or months of effort if you let the cat win once, because it bolsters the idea to keep trying in the face of not getting a treat, because you might get one every once in a while.

A couple of more pieces of advice: Do not allow your cat to sit on your lap while you eat. Make your lap a difficult place for him to go by putting objects on your lap or by sitting in such a way that pussy cat cannot jump up into your lap. The mealtime lap sitting and food grabbing is not reinforced, but hanging out nearby is not stopped however. Be consistent, reinforcing puss not getting food from your plate, simultaneously not allowing him in your lap while you eat. Do not give in and occasionally sneak him a snack from your plate — doing so will encourage him to increase his efforts of making your food his own.

Along with teaching your cat good mealtime manners, feed him his meals at the same time you eat yours. Feeding him when you eat will keep him occupied for a short time and should take the edge off his hunger; helping to decrease his desire to steal your food.
