Cat Food Review - Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care vs. Royal Canin Renal Support

Thunder was recently diagnosed as being in the early stages of kidney failure. The vet prescribed a low-protein diet specifically for cats with kidney issues. In this video, we compare the Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care Veterinary Exclusive to the Royal Canin Renal Support.

Both of these products contain grains. The inclusion of grains is a necessary part of a low-protein diet. The dry formula of the Hill’s Prescription contains meal, but the wet formula does not. The Royal Canin contains meal and by-products in both their wet and dry formulas. I absolutely will not feed my cat by-products, so I will be returning the unused Royal Canin starter kit back to the vet’s office. The Internet provides a wide range of opinions regarding whether or not by-products are okay. I choose to take the safe route and not feed them to my cats.

Although I would prefer not to use food that contains meal, I do not feel as strongly about it as I do by-products, so the Hill’s Prescription Diet is the winner! Thunder will be eating the wet food as his main source of nutrition, and fortunately it doesn’t contain meal. He will be given the dry food in small quantities as a supplement to his diet.

In this video Thunder tries the Ocean Fish dry food. We also discuss the Tuna Pate wet food. Additional wet food flavors have been ordered, and we will do a separate review of the wet food flavors and varieties.
