Treating Senior Cat Regurgitation/Vomiting

Dislike 0 Published on 19 Aug 2012

UPDATE (5/2013): My cat passed away peacefully.

UPDATE (2/2/2013): Metamucil works just as well as Benefiber! However, at some point, my cat's appetite disappeared and he started to lose a lot of weight. This had nothing to do with the fiber being added to his diet. The vet discovered through a blood test that my cat has hyperthyroidism. Basically, my cat's metabolism was out of control and caused my cat to be nauseous and eventually lose his appetite. After starting my cat on the prescribed medication, his appetite came right back, he is no longer throwing up and he does not need the fiber supplement. Now for the bad news. My cat is one of the unlucky few that has an allergic reaction to the thyroid medication. Basically he now has a bad rash above each ear that continually itches. The only way to correct this problem is to have my cat undergo a radiation treatment that permanently corrects the hyperthyroidism. Unfortunately, this treament is $1200. Given that my cat is very old, I'm sticking with the daily thyroid pills and caring for his ongoing rash.

UPDATE (9/24/2012): I ran out of Benefiber and tried a generic. It does NOT provide the same relief as Benefiber. To make things worse, there is a shortage of Benefiber due to a recall of an unrelated product by Novartis. See http://www.novartis.com/newsroom/media-releases/en/2012/1575836.shtml for details.

If your senior cat is regurgitating (thowing up) two to three times a day and you haven't recently changed your cat's food, this quick, easy and effective change in your cat's diet may correct the problem. It did for me. ;-) My cat never had this issue until just a few months ago. I tried every mature/senior cat food blend available to no avail. I am currently giving my cat 1 teaspoon of Benefiber® per day and am possibly thinking of reducing it to just 1/2 a teaspoon. If you use this dietary supplement, please share your results. The only side effect that my cat has is that he now demands the Friskies Paté®. ;-) Please also keep in mind that your cat's vomiting may not stop right away. My cat's condition immediately improved as the vomiting was much less, but it didn't completely go away until after about three days.

IMPORTANT: Always consult your veterinarian before starting your cat on any special diet. The information presented in this video is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Materials Needed: Powdered Fiber (Benefiber® is recommended), Paté Cat Food (Friskies Classic Paté® is recommended), fork, spoon, bowl and, of course, your cat. ;-)
