I hydrate it with whole goat milk and they get a raw egg yolk in one meal a day to make sure they're getting extra fat, plus I add supplements just to be sure, since they're kittens, I add taurine, dr. goodpet probiotics and digestive enzymes, a b-multi, and some lactoferrin which mimics mothers milk.
Did you know vets don't take nutrition classes in vet school? Wonder why their walls are lined with Hills Science Diet food? Cats eat raw mice and birds in the wild, and secondarily lizards, bugs, and other small critters. They are descended from desert animals and are not good water drinkers, primarily getting their hydration from their prey. Yet vets push cooked canned food filled with byproducts and fillers like carrageenan, guar gum, Xanthan and vegetable gums.
And they recommend dry food. Dry food contains 15% or less moisture, and since cats aren't good water drinkers their kidneys fight and fight their entire lives to process this junk food, and eventually fail. Cat's should live to 20 or more years if fed correctly, yet they get hyperthyroidism (from the BPA in cat canned food liners), cancer (from the crap food we feed them) and kidney failure (from a lifetime of chronic dehydration).
Back to Hills, the mega-corporation that controls the information in the veterinary textbooks and sends free food to the schools, so by the time a vet graduates they LOVE Hills for all the free stuff they've been given. Then Hills goes a step further and offers to sell them their food which is not sold in regular stores, that they can market up 3000%. Who ever heard of prescription food? The founder of Hills began his career figuring out a way to feed people's pets during the rationing years of World War II. He put together a formula for dogs made up of the worst ingredients he could find but with just enough "nutrition" to keep them alive. He even wrote a book about it, still for sale online.
Let's revisit the fillers, specifically carrageenan. Carrageenan is an inflamatory, it can be found in many human foods so we assume it's safe. But now there is a push to remove it, and companies are starting to give in. Many cat owners notice symptoms in their older cats (cats hide illness well) including vomiting, constipation, and other digestive problems that vets label "IBD" or Irritable Bowel Disease. They scratch their heads, perplexed by this, claiming that no one knows where IBD comes from and brushing it off to cat genetics or environmental factors. Their solution? Shoot them up with steroids and/or put them on daily steroid medication which only masks the symptoms.
The problems come from their food! Once I took my cat Alabama (at 12 years old) off canned foods containing these fillers (guar, xanthan, vegetable gums and carrageenan) her IBD and allergies (rodent ulcer) went away, mostly. Unfortunately after a lifetime of annual vaccines which destroy the immune system and crappy Iams and Science Diet fast food, she still had to take daily steroids because her immune system had been destroyed. But even on the steroids, all her symptoms were still present even on the medication, due to these food toxins. Her life was extended 7 years by a mostly raw-food diet, with a few minimal-ingredients canned foods.
Imagine you eat McDonalds every day your entire life, then at age 60 you can't take it anymore and go to a doctor. But the doctor scratches his head because the fast food you eat shouldn't be an issue, after all, McDonalds does in-house testing and they've determined their food is healthy, plus you can buy salads there. So the doc shoots you up with prednisone which masks the symptoms but gives you diabetes, which you were on the verge of getting anyway from your diet. Imagine, again, if the food industry controlled what med students were taught, prevented them from taking health classes, and gave them prescription food only they make with 3000% markup to the doctor, and big pharma sent hot blonde drug-reps to their offices every month with free samples of new drugs to shoot you up with, rather than getting you off that fast food? Welcome to veterinary medicine.
Treat your babies right, no more vaccines after their first round as kittens and puppies, (they don't need rabies every year!) and feed them healthy raw species-appropriate food, they will grow big and strong and healthy with shiny coats and loving personalities!
