Hi, I’m Dr. Shannon Moore and I’m here at Hartland Veterinary Clinic to talk to you today about the importance of dental care in your pets. Both cats and dogs need routine dental care.

Cat Dog Teeth Cleaning is a daily habit for both of you.

If you can, what we do recommend is trying to brush their teeth every single day. That mechanical act of brushing their teeth and removing as much debris as you can daily will help to reduce gingivitis and plaque formation. Generally, dogs and cats will still need dental care through us by anesthetizing them and going ahead and removing all of that hard tartar that you cannot remove with a toothbrush.

Cat Dog Teeth Cleaning begins with a dental examination.

So just like you would go to the dentist at home to get that removed, you need to bring your pets here so that we can remove that for them. We use a scaler to go ahead and remove all of the tartar and calculus that has formed. What we do is when we put them under, we check each tooth and we make sure that it’s a good tooth. And if not, then we can go ahead and extract that tooth. It’s so, so important to routinely do this for your animals because it’s just a source of chronic infection and bacteria, and has even been shown to lead to heart disease if you leave all of these bad teeth in there.

Cat Dog Teeth Cleaning prevents costly dental problems.

The other thing that can happen is that you can get a tooth root abscess, which will cause swelling of the face and be very, very painful. Cats, in particular, can get a disease called stomatitis of the mouth, where sometimes we’ll even need to end up extracting all of the teeth in their mouth in order to help relieve them of pain. Your animal will be so much more comfortable if their teeth are taken care of. Just imagine if you had a bad tooth in your mouth, trying to eat and just trying to do day-to-day activities is so, so painful if you have teeth problems. So please be sure to bring animal in, get them checked, and if needed, then go ahead do that dental cleaning. It will keep your animal so much healthier and happier. Thank you.
