The European Shorthair is perhaps the most common feline in Europe today. Apart from that, the European Shorthair cat breed may also be the oldest one in continental Europe. The breed can even be dated back to the time of the emperors in Rome about 2,000 years ago. The cats were thus spread throughout the European continent and appreciated on farms due to their great hunting abilities. The cats were also useful to help control populations of rodent.
Cats of this breed have also been referred to by various names, like Celtic Shorthair. It took until the 20th century before people finally recognized the breed and started working to preserving them. Breeding of European Shorthair focused on producing cats that might look like they did back in the ancient Rome era. And just like the Domestic Shorthair, this breed also has a mixed ancestry. Therefore, cats of the breed have a wide range of patterns, colors, and temperaments.
The European Shorthair cats can make wonderful family pets. Starting as European Shorthair kitten, the cats are ready to bond with their humans. Even so, the cats can also possess the territorial tendencies and will rule the house happily if given the chance. This way, you need to be cautious that cats of this breed may not be able to get along with other cats. Consider getting other cats that can make a good compatible with one of this breed. However, considering the varied ancestry, there are also those which can get along really well with other pets as well as other cats.
Plenty of interaction and attention every day is important to care for European Shorthair cats. Most of all, they truly enjoy spending their times with owners. Aside from being very good hunters, cats of the breed are also known for being affectionate, playful, and intelligent. They are highly adaptable as well, thus they can adjust to changes in environments quite well, including new people.
In general, European Shorthair cats have a dense short coat, in addition to muscular and stocky body with a short tail. Colors of the eye range from blue and green to amber, as well as “odd eyes”, referring to different color in each eye. No extreme physical features are present. Thus the cats will have round and tapered ear tips in addition to round faces. The colors and patterns also come in a wide range, such as blue, black, red, silver, cream, and smoke.
