15 RAREST Cat Breeds In The World!
Cats are among the favorite preferred pets by millions across the world and big-time feline lovers know that they come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. That's not all, despite their mysterious personalities, cat owners often attest that they connect with their furry buddies differently so they aren't always grumpy with an attitude. They also know some rare cat breeds come with a HEAVY price tag and considered to be collector gems. I mean, most of us might know common cat breeds like the Persian the American Shorthair, but have you ever heard of a Burmilla or a Turkish Angora? Chances are that you probably haven’t but like any rare marvel, these breeds are DEFINITELY something to treasure. Lucky for you, today's video will showcase 15 rarest cat breeds in the world!
15. Egyptian Mau
As the name suggests, this cat originated from the horn of Africa and the name Mau is also translated from the Egyptian word for cat. The Egyptians aren't only known as lovers of cats but were also known to worship them. The Egyptian Mau was as a result of a breeding of two Tabby cats who gave rise to this beautiful and unique spotted gem. Also, they're one of the few domestic cat breeds with naturally occurring spots on its coat. Aside from the notable spots, this cat is a speed demon, with speeds recorded up to 30 miles per hour! As a pet, they’re moderately active and can often be seen portraying hunting skills by preying on toys or perching on top of the refrigerator. On the bright side, despite the fierce nature it portrays, it's very affectionate to its owners and vocally shows signs of affection by meowing in a pleasant voice.
14. Turkish Van
Known as the swimming cat for its enthusiasm to play in bodies of water, the Turkish Van is an ancient breed thought to have originated in the Lake Van area of Turkey. This cat is so rare that it’s regarded as a “regional treasure” in their Turkish homeland, prompting the government to limit exports of this cat to other countries. Legend has it that it swam ashore from Noah’s ark, which tradition says landed on Mount Ararat in Turkey, not far from Lake Van. Vans boast a cashmere-like coat and solidly built body thanks to the mountainous and cold climate of the region. They’re distinct in that their bodies are always covered in pure white fur as the tail takes up a different color due to a genetic mutation.
The fortunate enough to meet a Turkish Van find that they’re an affectionate, intelligent, and energetic breed. These cats can even learn to play fetch!!! One thing pet owners need to know about their feline friends is that they’re at high risk of minor water accidents due to their fascination with water bodies. Put down toilet seats and other open water basins if you aren’t there to supervise their aquatic excursions.
13. American Wirehair
The American Wirehair is an American original unique breed that began as a random mutation in a litter of six domestic shorthair kittens born on Council Rock Farm in Verona, New York. Imagine fur that springs back when you rub it. That’s not the typical reaction we expect when we pet a cat, but the American Wirehair's springy resilient coat is the crown of its charm and good looks. The genetic mutation is so rare that so far it hasn't occurred naturally in any other country.
American Shorthair: adaptable, good-natured, affectionate, and playful. This is an athletic cat with a moderate activity level. So it may even go unnoticed since it’s silent and not a lap cat. However, be sure it will follow you from room to room since it loves people. It will always appreciate having a spot next to you on the sofa or at the end of the bed.
What is it? Where did it come from? Why does it look that way? These are questions that many have asked over and over since the Lykoi started as a breed. As much as some consider this to be an ugly cat, some cat lovers consider this rare feline a beauty and yearn to own one. To the sight, it looks like werewolf and this is because of a natural mutation from a domestic shorthair and not related to the Sphynx as appearance may suggest.
Derived from the Greek name for "werewolf", Lykoi cats earned their name due to the mask-like appearance on their faces where they grow little to no fur. Also, they tend to transform through their lifetime. The Lykoi have a unique gene that specifically for breed that causes not only the intermix of normal color hair with white hair but also the pattern balding of the hair coat. Unlike werewolves, the lykoi are affectionate, playful souls, and loyal companions.
